October 01, 1949 Surry Hills Retired Committed Relationship

Thank you to the reunion committee for all of your hard work over the years.  I have attended reunion years 10, 20, and 35.  This year I have some travel conflicts and will not be able to attend this important 50th reunion.
Here is a bit of my story and who I am:    I taught high school for a year in 1974 after getting my teaching credential from SDSU that January.  The end of that year I snared a job with TWA as a flight attendant on their international flights.  Instead of what I thought would be a year or so of a simple and fun job turned into a career of 26 years.  I learned  2 languages so I could become a purser then an In-Flight Service Manager in charge of the crew on 747's flying to Europe and the Middle East.  In the 70's, 80's and even into the early 90's, this had to be one of the mosted enchanted jobs available.  I worked 12 days a month, had 2 months annual vacation and had a nice reward at the end of a work day.  We were ensconced in some of the best hotels in fascinating cities such as Rome, Cairo, Athens, Barcelona, and Tel Aviv.  I took off time without pay my first 10 years so I could have the extra time to be a traveler instead of a tourist to every location I dreamed of experiencing in the world.  I bought an apartment in Manhattan in 1980 and a getaway cabin on a river in 1984, 2 hours north of Manhattan in rural New York.  That year I met my partner of 20 years that was Australian.  Through him I was able to get Australian permanent residency over 25 years ago because of our long term relationship in the U.S.  I retired from TWA when the airline was falling apart the end of 2000.  American Airlines took over TWA.  I now get AA retirement flight benefits.

I went back back to teaching in my rural area of New York.  Teaching had changed drastically since I had taught at Castle Park High School in 1974 for one semester.  After years of being frustrated in a dysfunctional school, I moved to Australia to gain my citizenship from my permanent residency.  It was interesting to see how a different culture was able to give their citizens universal health care and a substantial living minimum wage. I returned to New York and officially declared myself retired.  I returned to Australia for 4 months every NY winter for the next 4 years.  I met my present partner, a Sydney physician, 5 years ago and spend 6 months of the year there.  I have a difficult time giving up my beautiful Mid Hudson River Valley area where I mountain bike nearly every day.  It truly is one of the most beautiful areas in the Northeast.  I have to admit I am glad I have Dual citizenship and can escape the madness of the current political situation

Whenever someone asks me where I am from, I always say San Diego, California.  I have lived more of my life and have been greatly influenced by NYC,  NY State  and Australia.  My head is in NY and Australia but my heart will always be in San Diego.

Cheers,

Stephen Granfield

San Diego CA retired Married 3
I am now retired after 32 years with the state, mostly in law enforcement (parole). I have been married to my sweet wife for 35 years and we have 3 married children and 7 (wow) beautiful grandchildren.  They all live in close proximity so I am kept very busy with their endeavors.  My wife still teaches at Poway High School while I am adjusting to retired life.  Somehow it doesn't seem fair...  40 years since high school and I still look the same.  Go figure.

Boulder CO Retired Counselor Married 2
Hi Fellow Lancer Alums! I left my island home in WA after 28 years to retire
in Boulder, Co. three years ago, returning to the place where I married my husband, Gary, gave birth to the first of two sons, and attended graduate school at the University of Colorado.  I worked as a geriatric mental health therapist and later a junior high school counselor.  Both my sons landed in CO as well, along with a daughter in law and, now, my 3 year old grandson.  We're loving our retirement lifestyle here in CO, keeping busy as well as traveling a lot.
Now that I have made the decision to travel out to So Cal for our 50th, my excitement to reconnect with you all is building!  Thanks to our committee!

San Diego Federal Court Interpreter / Translator Married 3

Thank You Reunion Committee for organizing and working so hard for us to come together after 50 years!  It seems like life has gone by so fast - and the urgency to make each day count is greater for sure - It is more important than ever to find new joys and to cherish all the gold we have worked so hard to find in our lives.  We are all in good health and still quite crazy after all these years! We now have 8 grandchildren - the oldest one Zachary,  is 16!  I am still working in the Federal Court as an Interpreter/Translator in Spanish.  I still love my job, but I am planning to finally retire at the end of this year in December after 33 years. I still want to travel some more - and go back to my music and playing my piano.  My husband Ricky and my oldest son Albert are winemakers. They are now bonded and licensed.  Albert and his family live in Julian California - and we live part-time in Julian and part-time in Coronado.  When I retire I hope to help more with the wine business.  It is a lot of fun -  but a big sacrifice and lots of work indeed!  I still enjoy living in Coronado and will miss taking the ferry to work once I retire.  My husband Ricky and I will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary next year in 2018.  I'm looking forward to seeing you all in October.

Love and hugs, Letty

It continues to be a joy and honor to get reconnected with so many of you through the our reunions.  I'm really looking forward to October and seeing many of you again, and others for the first time in all these years.

Since my update in 2007, life has continued busy for us.  Bev and I sold our home in Wellesley, MA and moved to Rhode Island where our oldest daughter, Lisa and her family (including our 3 oldest grandchildren ages 13, 10 & 10) live, with plans to stay for a year.  We're now 7 years into our one year plan and thoroughly enjoy living here along the upper Narragansset Bay. Our middle daughter, Anna, has returned to the east coast after several years in Nashville, TN, Durham, NC, and Portland, OR, and is recently engaged to be married.  Our youngest daughter, Emily, is settled into Issaquah, WA outside Seattle, where she lives with her husband and our youngest grandchildren, ages 4 and almost 2. Bev is happily grandmothering, and continues her part-time work as an editor and copy writer.  I'm taking a breather after doing a couple of start-ups in the Boston area, and dangerously close to retiring.  My mother is now 97 and living in assisted living in Chula Vista; my father passed away in 2010 at 92.   My sister, Rowena, is still in Bonita with her family, and my brother, Bob, is still in Las Vegas, NV, with his.

Funny how all the paths diverge, re-merge, and move on...and then come together for Reunions!  See you all soon...can't wait!!
